BARRIE Colts’ leading goalscorer Tyson Foerster has made his way to the big leagues after being drafted 24th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2020 NHL draft.
The right-wing superstar bagged 80 goals and assists in 62 games last season as the Colts finished fifth in the OHL Eastern Conference. Foerster was invited to the Kubota NHL Top Prospects game where he jumped up draft boards as he scored two goals, claimed an assist and was awarded the Team White Player of the Game.
On the Colts website, the 18-year-old said: “[I am] honoured to be selected by the Flyers and I don’t think I could have done it without you guys. It’s a dream come true; I know the Flyers are a really gritty team and I can’t wait to learn more about them. I just want to thank the coaches, my teammates, the trainers and especially the fans. You guys are the best and I miss you all.”
Colts’ center Evan Vierling will also get a chance to play in the NHL after he was selected 127th overall by the New York Rangers.
Vierling joined Barrie in January after being traded from the Flint Firebirds. The Aurora native bagged two goals and 10 points for the Firebirds before his transfer, and for the Colts he added 14 goals and 30 assists in 43 games played.
Vierling said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling being drafted by the New York Rangers. I’ve worked so hard for this my whole life. I couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out. I look forward to getting back to work with my teammates in Barrie.”
