Wasaga Beach will welcome back former NHL All Star Jason Arnott for the eagerly anticipated NHL Alumni Hockey Game on February 10 at the new Wasaga Arena on River Road West.
The Alumni Game, which brings together notable NHL stars such as Shayne Corson and Scott Thornton, is part of the “Breaking the Ice Festival.” The two-week festival not only kicks off the town’s 50th-anniversary celebrations but also heralds the grand opening of the state-of-the-art NHL-size, twin-pad arena and library – a milestone for the community.
Jason Arnott, who scored the legendary game-winning goal in double overtime for the New Jersey Devils during the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals, will be a focal point of the event. Over his storied career, Arnott has made significant contributions on the ice during his 18-year NHL career, amassing an extraordinary 900 points in the NHL and becoming a World Champion with Canada in 1994.
In a recent interview with Georgian Sports News, Arnott reflected fondly on his upbringing in the Georgian Bay area: “Growing up in Wasaga was the best part of my life. And I’ll never forget where I came from, and just happy to be a part of it and I’m excited to actually see the new rink. I haven’t seen it yet.”
Arnott also recollected about his career-defining Stanley Cup goal and thinks back to his childhood days. He said: “I think every kid growing up in their basement always plays in their mind that they’re gonna score the Stanley Cup game-winning goal. And it came true for me. The best time of my NHL life. That’s what we played for.”
“I was fortunate enough to win it and score the game-winning goal, which was just icing on the cake, and just what a thrill and experience something I’ll never ever definitely ever forget.”
